Going digital? (march 2004). Only four years ago Internet provider AOL merged with Time Warner, thereby constituting a huge global media and entertainment group. The new company, however, did not live up to the expectations. Over the next years its debts went spiralling down to a depth of 30 billion dollar. In September 2003 the board of directors confirmed that the company would change its name back to Time Warner. At the time of the merger, Hans Durrer wrote this essay which we here reprint for its early doubts about the whole operation.

"Gewoon lol, ze hadden er gewoon lol in" (januari 2004). Als "Pascal Posé" maakte Ulf Posé in 1968 deel uit van het deejayteam van het mislukte zeezenderproject Radio Nordsee. Vervolgens werkte hij onder de naam "Hannibal" bij zeezender RNI op het zendschip MEBO II. Tot 1980 was hij aansluitend, nu als "Ullrich," drie en een half jaar in dienst van Radio Luxembourg en daarna, ditmaal onder zijn eigen naam, liefst zeven jaar bij de WDR. Martin van der Ven voerde een lang gesprek met de man die achter al die namen schuilgaat.

Running the Euro-siege blockade (january 2004). Bob LeRoi started his radio career with a few stints for Radio City on the Shivering Sands Forts in 1965. Three years later, in 1968, he missed the chance of going to the MV Mi Amigo for Radio Caroline. In the late 1970's though, while working for the local BBC Radio, he became involved with supplying the new Radio Caroline ship, the MV Ross Revenge, on the tender Henrietta. Here he recalls some of his memories for our Radio Caroline series.

Britain's buccaneer broadcasters: my story of Radio Caroline (january 2004). In 1965 Steve Young became a pirate, joining Radio Caroline South in 1966 to do overnight and daytime relief shifts. In 1968 he returned to Canada, working at CKOV Kelowna, CFRN Edmonton, CKIQ Kelowna, CJVI Victoria and CHEK-TV Victoria. In this contribution to our Radio Caroline series, Young revives some of his memories of his high days on international waters.

More Caroline cut-outs: March 1968-September 1972 (january 2004). Next to thousands of newspaper cut-outs, Hans Knot fosters an impressive amount of diary notes about the state of offshore radio. In this contribution to our series on the forty-year history of Radio Caroline, he takes us through some of his notes scribbled down in the years between 1968 and 1972, when Radio Caroline was not on the air from her own ships.

New Year and no nicotine ... (january 2004). From August 9, 1983, till November 6, 1990, Radio Caroline would be airing its programmes from the MV Ross Revenge. Over a three year period — from 16th December 1984 to 24th November 1987 — the Lady shared her ship with Radio Monique. Frits Koning was one of the guys working for Radio Monique. In this fourth instalment of our Radio Caroline series, he shares his memories of his first Christmas and New Year aboard the Ross Revenge.

Some Radio Caroline cut-outs (january 2004). Radio Caroline sure was prone to headlines. In this third instalment of our Radio Caroline series, Hans Knot takes us back to what the newspapers wrote about the offshore station, adding a few of his personal memories.

Looking back at Caroline with Mike and Tom (january 2004). From Easter 1964 on, when the offshore station Radio Caroline came on air for the first time, its listeners were won over by the deejays. In the late summer of 1988, in the Essex Radio studio, Robert Chapman interviewed two of them: Mike Ahern and Tom Lodge.

A memorable Saturday: September 30, 1972 (january 2004). Almost nobody heard the very short test transmission in the late evening of September 29, 1972, on 1187 kHz. The next day, however, many people noticed the non-stop music, being aired on the 257.2 meters, coming directly from the MV Mi Amigo. Indeed, Radio Caroline was back on the air and due to bring some impressive high energy radio over the ensuing years. Here Hans Knot tells us all there is to know about that illustrious Saturday, September 30, 1972.

The wet and wild history of Radio Caroline (january 2004). On March 27, 1964, the offshore station Radio Caroline started its transmissions from the former MV Fredericia. Nowadays, the station still can be heard by way of internet and satellite. Here Hans Knot introduces a new series of articles, memorizing the forty year history of Radio Caroline.

Autumn 2003

"It was decided over a cup of coffee and a joke" (december 2003). Tim Thomason was the man behind the short lived offshore station Capital Radio, airing its programs form the MV "King David" in 1970. Recently Jelle Knot interviewed him. In this second part of his report, Thomason tells us more about the departure of the ship from IJmuiden harbour, the whereabouts of the Liechtenstein flag of the ship, and the close-down of the station after the ship ran ashore on the coast of Noordwijk.

A ring antenna for Radio Capital (december 2003). On May 1, 1970, the offshore station Radio Capital aired its first testprogrammes. The adventure didn't last long. That very same year, on November 10, Capital's ship, the MV "King David," ran ashore near Noordwijk. Recently Jelle Knot met Tim Thomason, the man behind the station, and asked him how it all started ...

Tony Allan tells his story (december 2003). As a deejay, Tony Allan was involved with famous offshore stations like RNI, Radio Caroline, Radio Seagull, Radio Mi Amigo, Radio Atlantis and the Voice of Peace. He now tells all about his exploits on a double-cd, which was released in 2002. Approvingly, Hans Knot listened to the results.

The El Mocambo Tavern and the Toronto music scene (december 2003). Despite its illusory quality, Allan Moore argues, pop audiences feel the need to ascribe authenticity to particular artists. The same can be said of the public spaces that prove so important in the history of pop music. Just like artists, they may win or lose their credits of that strange, volatile currency that regulates their fates. Looking into this matter, Andrew Scott here analyzes the final chapter of Toronto's rock temple, the El Mocambo.

"This is your life" (december 2003). Eind jaren vijftig was op de Nederlandse televisie het programma "Dit is uw leven" te zien, een bewerking van het Amerikaanse "This is your life", dat ook in een Engelse variant uiterst populair was. Na meer dan duizend afleveringen berichtte de BBC onlangs definitief met het programma te stoppen. Hans Knot blikt terug op deze vroege vorm van emotietelevisie.

Internationale radio in Londen (november 2003). In november 2002 brachten Hans Knot en Rob Olthof een bezoek aan het gebouw van het World Radio Network in Vauxhall, ten zuiden van het centrum van Londen. Ze werden daar rondgeleid door Tim Ayers en Thomas Völkner. Hier doen ze verslag van wat ze hoorden en zagen.

The fight for free radio (october 2003). In 1967 the Free Radio Association organized a march from Trafalgar Square to Fleet Street. In 1970 the British offshore stations even were campaigning for the Tories to prevent the jamming of Radio Caroline and Radio Northsea International. In 1973 there was a huge demonstration in The Hague in favour of Radio Veronica. That's not all, as there were many more things going on in the fight for Free Radio. Looking back, Hans Knot here takes us on a march again, but now through memory lane.

"Spaß! Sie hatten einen irren Spaß daran" (oktober 2003). Ulf D. Posé gehörte als Pascal Posé zur Diskjockey-Crew des gescheiterten Seesender-Projekts Radio Nordsee. In 1970 arbeitete er dann unter dem Namen Hannibal tatsächlich bei der Offshore-Station RNI. Bis 1980 war er anschließend als Ullrich bei Radio Luxembourg beschäftigt und dann unter seinem eigenen Namen beim WDR. Auf dem Radiotag in Erkrath im September 2003 sprach Martin van der Ven mit ihm über seine Rundfunkkarriere.

Summer 2003

Een nieuw schip voor Veronica (august 2003). In 1964 verhuisde de commerciële zeezender Radio Veronica al haar apparatuur naar een nieuw schip. Veel ruchtbaarheid werd er destijds aan deze operatie niet gegeven en dat gaf aanleiding tot de nodige geruchten. Hans Knot hield de berichtgeving in de pers nauwgezet bij en controleerde het een en ander in lange interviews met Bull Verweij.

De betekenis van heavy metal (august 2003). In 1996 publiceerde Jeffrey Jensen Arnett de resultaten van zijn onderzoek naar de subcultuur en fanbase van de heavy metal, de heavy-metal-scene. Zowel zijn methodologische aanpak als zijn theoretische vragen zijn nog steeds relevant, zo betoogt Juul Mulder in deze boekbespreking.

De rafels van de kavels (juli 2003). Na een lange aanloop zijn de commerciële etherfrequenties intussen onder de gegadigden verdeeld. Lang niet iedereen is echter tevreden met het resultaat en er lopen al weer de nodige procedures bij de Rotterdamse rechter. Walter Dubateau vertelt er meer over.

Het Genootschap Radio Jingles en Tunes zet de Tros op CD (juli 2003). Het roemruchte Genootschap Radio Jingles en Tunes heeft al heel wat oude jingles van de vergetelheid gered door ze zorgzaam op CD over te zetten. Onlangs ontfermde het gezelschap zich zo over de jingle-pakketten die de TROS in 1979 en 1981 bij het Amerikaanse TM aanschafte. Hans Knot luisterde met plezier naar het resultaat.

De Gwin-box: vijftien uur luisterplezier (juli 2003). Bij popradio horen jingles. Ieder station moest en moet sterke jingles hebben om zijn naam en programma's herkenbaar te maken. Daaraan leverde het Amerikaanse Gwin-sound van Tom Gwin een forse bijdrage. De jinglepakketten van dit bedrijf zijn nu verzameld op een twaalfdelige CD-box. Jelle Boonstra luisterde er voor ons naar.

Spring 2003

Queertoons (june 2003). Taking a long-term view on its history, sociologist Jeffery P. Dennis here describes the presentation of same-sex desire in the animated cartoon, ranging from Bugs Bunny and Yogi Bear, by way of The Smurfs, Ren and Stimpy, Pinky and the Brain, and Spongebob Squarepants, to The Simpsons, South Park and Dexter's Laboratory.

Politiek als wantrouwen en voorstelling (juni 2003). In veel westerse landen is de laatste tien jaar een sterk maatschappelijk wantrouwen voelbaar in de politiek, dat vooral de traditionele politieke instituties en hun vertegenwoordigers raakt. Draagt de journalistiek daar actief aan bij? In zijn boek De dramademocratrie beantwoordt Mark Elchardus die vraag bevestigend. Henk Kleijer las het kritisch door.

Sixty years of AFN in Europe (may 2003). Next July the American Forces Network will celebrate its 60th anniversary. Anticipating this occasion, AFN-experts Ingo Paternoster and John Proven compiled a double-cd set with a wide range of sound fragments, covering the whole lifespan of the station, or rather the stations, up until now. Hans Knot listened through all of it and now shares his opinions and memories with us.

Zestig jaar American Forces Network (mei 2003). In juli van dit jaar bestaat het American Forces Network zestig jaar. Voor die gelegenheid stelde AFN-kenner Ingo Paternoster samen met John Proven een dubbel-cd samen met een keur van opnames die hij in de loop van de tijd verzamelde. Hans Knot luisterde er voor ons naar.

Een deejaytafel voor Hilversum 3 (mei 2003). Op 11 oktober 1965 begonnen de uitzendingen van Hilversum 3, het door de publieke omroepen geleide station dat een tegenwicht moest bieden aan de populaire zeezenders. Het station had een moeizame start. Toch ontwikkelde het station zich in de loop der jaren steeds meer tot echte popradio. Een belangrijke wending kwam in september 1971 met de installatie van een heuse deejaytafel. Aan die gebeurtenis haalt Hans Knot hier een herinnering op.

The morning mayor of New York (april 2003). On March 19th, 2003 Harry Harrison bid farewell to his massive audience in New York, where he was on air for over four decades. In those years Harrison worked for three of the greatest radio stations of this city: WMCA, WABC and WCBS. Hans Knot looks back on the long radio career of New York's morning mayor.

Bringing the MV Peace to Israel (april 2003). After three years in New York harbor, on 16th March 1973, the MV Peace sailed out to her eventual destination, three miles off the coast of Tel-Aviv. There, from 26th May, Abie Nathan's Voice of Peace would air its messages of peace to the Middle East. Engineer Ed Simeone here recalls his memories of a hectic voyage across the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.

Zesendertig beatmeisjes en evenzovele verhalen (april 2003). In het jaar 2000 verscheen bij uitgeverij Arena in Amsterdam een boekje met de titel Nederbeat van de hand van Frank Dam. Een vervolg is nu uitgebracht door de Uitgeverij Veen in Amsterdam onder de veelzeggende titel Beatmeisjes. Hans Knot las het voor ons door.

The music matters (april 2003). Speaking about Chuck Berry, Robert Christgau once wrote: "Repetition without tedium is the backbone of rock and roll." This thesis is confirmed by Joe Burns for this whole style of popular music from the years 1955 through 1959. He here presents the results of his analysis of the chord progressions, time signatures and melody lines of a representative sample of 100 rock and roll songs.

The riddles of rock and roll (april 2003). Rock and roll has often been equated with rebellion. The genre, though, is just a form of popular music and many of the important players were, like the saying goes, only in it for the money. So, how did this music acquire its rebellious image? Investigating this question, Leo D'Anjou here retells the story of the early beginnings of rock music.
