Davies, Stephen (1997), "So, you want to sing with the Beatles? Too late!" In: The Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism, Perspectives on the Arts and Technology, 55, 2 (Spring), 1997, 129-137. |

In this article Stephen Davies considers interactive music disks, such as concerto-minus-one recordings and karaoke, asking if one can join with the recorded instrumentalists in playing or singing along. Davies suggests, that because the recorded performance is completed, one cannot do so, but that such disks serve their purpose in promoting the illusion of joint performance. The latest CD-Rom technology allows for a more complex interaction in that the user can modify the disk's output. The result is a move toward the composition of pieces based on, but distinct from, those that supplied the source material. |
