  Abstract 0313
Stein, Jill Marie, Jerome Rabow and Darryl el Mouchi (1993), "The opening of the American mind: Allan Bloom ... meet the Beatles." Paper published by the Society for the Study of Social Problems (SSSP), 1993.
Previous
In this essay the authors try to address the current debate over the significance of popular culture by examining the argument of social critic Allan Bloom regarding the detriment of popular music to the moral and educational development of students. Through sociological argument and an analysis of four Beatles songs as a case study, it is suggested that Bloom's assessments are incorrect. He fails to understand the social construction and permeability of high and popular culture, ignores the recognition given to the Beatles by important artists, intellectuals and scholars. He also ignores the ways that lyrics serve as open texts actively interpreted by listeners to reflect, express, and develop their individual voices, thus contributing to the principles of the democratic process. A textual analysis of Beatles songs is used to support these contentions.
